Elvis Presley, born January 8, 1935 @ 4:35 a.m., Tupelo, Mississippi
EVENT: Death of Elvis Presley, August 16, 1977, by sudden heart failure brought about by the abuse of drugs and prescription medication -
LOOKING AT HIS SECONDARY PROGRESSIONS:
Less than six months prior to Elvis Presley’s death, his life force, vitality, and identity (Sun) entered a new house and sign -- the 4th house of Pisces (home, foundation, family, and what makes Elvis feel safe and secure). The 4th house rules “the end of the matter,” and as such, is one of the traditional houses for death. Pisces is known for being “otherworldly” and “spiritual” and thus provides escape from the harsh realities of this material existence. An ingress of the Sun into a new sign and house by progression always represents an important new beginning, and an ending to a way of being that had been ongoing for the past ~30 years. This newly ingressed Sun brought new challenges, restrictions, and lessons to Elvis’ life because it joined up with Saturn when it crossed over into Pisces. P Saturn crossed over the 4th house threshold approximately 6 years earlier, and the Sun finally caught up him -- the teacher of life’s hard lessons, and “blood, sweat, and tears” hard earned rewards. Now, Elvis’ life direction, purpose, and identity would be taking a hit, as being conjunct Saturn always slows things down long enough to take a hard, realistic look at things. The message for Elvis was to stop, slow down, be realistic, especially about the things you cannot control; work hard on letting go; be responsible; take care of things that matter; build your spiritual foundation, cherish those you consider family, and those who love you unconditionally -- Find your inner peace, strength, and compassion for yourself and others. Saturn simply delineated stated that Elvis’ life force (Sun) just sidled up against death (Saturn is the traditional planet of death). The “end of the matter” (4th) was here -- things were going to change (new sign & house), whether he was ready for it, or not. Get responsible (Saturn) about your life (Sun)!
The P Sun was also inconjunct the natal nodal axis, indicating an important fated event that would teach valuable lessons having to do with Elvis’ life, vitality, purpose, and direction. An inconjunct always requires an adjustment be made, but one that is not easy to recognize or accomplish. This signified that the destiny of Elvis’ life was in a fated, life-changing adjustment period, reiterating the Sun’s conjunction to Saturn in a new sign and house. Also, the POF was newly placed in the Cancerian 8th house of death. Since the POF is derived from mathematical calculations of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant positions, and those are valid points of consideration when looking at progressions, the progressed POF by association must also be valid and important. Therefore, it would be quite notable when it is at 0° of a new sign and house. Elvis’ Presley’s POF’s new home in the Cancer 8th house of death reiterates the importance of home, roots, security, and family (Cancer), and the potential for death and transformation (8th house). In an article about the POF written by Robert Hand posted in the Newsgroup alt.astrology in February and March 1996, he stated: "In ancient astrology... "the Part of Fortune... describe the basic way in which the individual is physically connected with the surrounding world... The Ascendant... [is] the body at its most physical, material level. The Moon... [is the] soul incarnated [into] a physical body. The Part of Fortune, being composed of both... is [one of the indicators] of the living, physical body..." Therefore, it is my supposition that the POF entering the 8th house of death could be a signature for leaving this material plane.
The P Mars squared both N Pluto and P Pluto -- P Mars squared P Pluto by 2’ of arc! Because this is a progressed planet to another progressed planet, the impetus is not something controllable. Bernadette Brady states that when an aspect is formed between progressed planets, the urge comes from a divine impulse, and the need to express the energy is without compromise. This compulsion cannot be explained away, talked out of, or reasoned with. Mars squaring Pluto is a lot of energy that needs to manifest the fulfillment of its expression. There is tremendous power, control, force, impulsivity, anger, action, danger, and accidents all wrapped up in this challenging square. Natally, Pluto is conjunct the South Node while squaring Uranus in the 5th house of Aries, ruled by Mars. Pluto has one corner of the Grand Square’s natal configuration and Uranus has another. The P South Node at the critical 29° just moved backward into the 8th house of death and squared progressed Uranus directly. Because the averaged midpoint of Elvis’ natal stellium, which is another corner of the grand square, is approximately 25°, P Mars is also squaring and activating the stellium. Elvis’ grand square is charged, brought closer to exact, and its non-planetary corner with the POF has been filled by P Mars! -- This increases the energy of the configuration exponentially. Mars is the ruler of two corners of the natal grand square -- One by rulership, and the other by exaltation, Saturn is averse his rulership. Is it no wonder Elvis Presley was continuing to drive himself until the bitter end, even though all the signs told him to stop? His friends told him to take a vacation. His body told him to quit abusing it. And, his fans were becoming disenchanted with his ballooning weight, and incoherent drugged slurs. Everything and everyone was telling him to slow down and regroup, but he would not listen. The P Moon was in the 10th house highlighting his public life and reputation. Being trine the N Sun, it felt comfortable for Elvis to focus on his attention onto career needs.
P Mercury (ruler of the career) is retrograde, and has just completed a conjunction with natal Saturn, reiterating mental seriousness, possible depression, and/or internalized mental troubles, and a “hard work” focus. Reiterating work, P Mercury is also trine P Mars and inconjunct Pluto, indicating a lot of internal mental energy to expend that cannot be controlled, but wants to control everything, but it is in a serious need for an adjustment. Maybe this is another reason why Elvis couldn’t stop? P Venus sextile natal Mercury was stimulating and providing an opportunity to create something beautiful, but at a price? This is reiterated by P Venus’ trine to P Jupiter, ruler of the Ascendant in the 12th house, showing the possibility of over-extending, extravagant excesses, and self-sabotaging desires could affected the mental and physical health. Since P Mercury is retrograde and conjunct Saturn, maybe Elvis felt it was easier to work (trine to P Mars) and over-extend himself (Jupiter) instead of stopping and slowing down. Elvis may have felt a tremendous desire (Venus trine Jupiter) to create that bordered on a pathological mental disturbance.
In the transiting chart, the T Nodes are square the natal Sun, indicating fateful lessons that will teach and challenge Elvis’ life direction and identity. T Pluto is conjunct N Mars, and sextile the N Ascendant, reiterating the theme of death and the opportunity for transformation of Elvis’ drive, actions, persona and character. T Neptune retrograde and approaching the N Ascendant suggests that the past year brought to Elvis the “otherworldly” and a need to escape. This theme was also described by the P Sun just entering the 4th house of Pisces. Unfortunately, Neptune much too easily is associated with the wrong types of escape -- particularly through the abuse of prescription medications which it rules, along with excesses of alcohol and other drugs. And, being retrograde makes its effects more internalized and possibly nostalgic. T Neptune also squared its own natal position, indicating it was time to reevaluate the way Elvis has been using his Neptune energies through deep reflection. T Neptune is also sextile N Mars showing the seduction of Neptune being connected to what Elvis does, his actions taken, and his ego and persona. This seduction energized Elvis to actively engage in its illusory and illusionary processes of escape, try to find its spiritual messages, or get lost in fantasy. Also, the T Sun and T Saturn are conjunct, mimicking the conjunction of P Sun and P Saturn, newly joined in a new house with new lessons for Elvis to learn.
Transiting Jupiter, ruler of Elvis’ Sagittarius Ascendant, is inconjunct the natal and progressed nodal axis and natal Venus. Venus is the ruler of Elvis’ failing health. The theme of needing adjustment is very strong, particularly with the way Jupiter and Venus interact. Natal Jupiter is in Elvis’ 12th house of his own self-undoing, and its transit to the progressed and natal nodal axis, both by an inconjunct aspect, suggests that fated events are likely to manifest due to Elvis’ inability to recognize his own self-sabotaging ways. This reiterates the over-extending and extravagant excesses that are so commonly attributed to Jupiter/Venus connections, particularly since Venus rules Elvis’ illnesses, and Jupiter rules his Ascendant (body/persona) from the averse and difficult 12th house.
And finally, transiting Venus, ruler of Elvis’ failing health, is going through the 8th house of death opposing the natal Sun. This is self-explanatory. I know Venus moves fast, but this seems like the finger on trigger that fired the fatal round. Transiting Mars inconjunct the P Ascendant seems like the important trigger which drove the nail into his coffin.
