EVENT: Death of Elvis Presley, August 16, 1977, by sudden heart failure brought about by the abuse of drugs and prescription medication -
Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, by sudden heart failure brought on by his abuse of drugs and prescription medication. There were 16 solar arc directions active at the time of his death using a 1° orb -- 10 of those within 26’! Out of those ten, six were making 4th harmonic aspects. Before discussing those directions, it is important to mention that less than 6-months before his death, Elvis Presley’s directed Sun entered the 4th house of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter in the 12th house of his own self-undoing. The 4th house rules “the end of the matter,” and as such, is one of the traditional houses for death. Pisces is “otherworldly” and “spiritual,” and provides an escape from the harsh realities of this world. This ingress represented an important new beginning for Elvis, and an ending to the way he had been for the past 30 years!
The most notable solar arc direction was SA Ascendant’s opposition to Pluto by 28’ at the same time the directed Sun moved into the Pisces 4th house. This is a big statement! The life of Elvis Presley facing death or big changes shown by the Sun’s new 4th house, and the Ascendant facing Pluto. N Pluto is in the 8th house of death conjuncting the South Node, and is the modern planet ruling death, rebirth, and transformation. Pluto represents the Phoenix rising from the ashes. The SA Ascendant was conjunct the midpoint of N Mercury and N Venus in Elvis’ personal planet stellium, along with the Sun and North Node. This direction shows the Ascendant coming in for a complete overhaul of Elvis’ entire being, mind, body, etc. If Elvis Presley had been able to face this major transition in this world, and make it through to the other side, he would have learned entirely new ways of being and been reborn. Instead, he did make it to the other side, but transitioned into another world.
A couple of other notable solar arc directions are: SA Mars from the 12th house squaring N Saturn in the 3rd. And, SA Venus, ruler of illness, squaring the Ascendant from the 4th house conjunct the newly ingressed Sun. Mars squaring Saturn points to the possibility of self-sabotaging actions taken too far that create difficulties and challenges with communication, the immediate environment and surrounding, and his mindset. Venus squaring the Ascendant points to the possibility of illness challenging Elvis’ body, life, and outward persona. Also, SA Mercury (conjunct Venus) squares Chiron by 17’ of arc, also from the 4th house. I will discuss the importance of Mercury next.
Because I delineated the outer planet transits for Elvis Presley’s death last week, I will focus on the profected house and timelord for the year of 1977. Elvis turned 42 in January 1977, bringing 7th house matters to the Ascendant and activating Mercury as his timelord for the year. The natal 7th house contains Chiron, Elvis’ wounding, and is therefore bought by profection to the body, life, and persona (Ascendant). Chiron natally challenges Elvis’ Moon by a hard-square aspect, from angular houses. The Moon, ruler of the house of death, and is brought to the 10th house of the public and career by profection. Therefore, the wound of Elvis, and his subsequent death are brought into his career and the public’s eye. Through directed houses by profection, the timelord Mercury opposes Pluto, from the 8th house of death. Natally, Pluto is ruled by the Moon, and operates in the house of death. Venus is conjunct and opposing Pluto, and she is the ruler of Elvis’ illness, which has also been profected by directed houses to the 8th house of death. This simple illustration of the profections show that death from illness and/or wounding is a clear potential for Elvis in 1977. Chiron natally in the 7th house suggests a wounding given and/or received from relationships playing a major role in Elvis’ death and illnesses. This is reiterated by Venus being the ruler of Elvis’ illnesses, and her opposition to Pluto in the 8th. After Elvis Presley’s divorce from Priscilla, he progressively got worse by engaging in extensive self-sabotaging behaviors that lead to his own self-destruction, illness, and death.
There are many important interpretive differences between active solar arc directions and the outer planet transits. An astrologer needs to keep in mind that solar arc directions are fictitious placements for the planets and points, and that the outer planet transits are the actual living motion of the planetary cycles. This is an important difference for understanding how to delineate them. Solar arc directions are symbolic representations of personal planets configured by movement, i.e. "directed", by an astrologically derived mathematical system. This direction indicates the timing “window” for manifestation of the potential set in the birth chart. Outer planet transits are the true representations of planetary movement, and they “trigger” the event promised in the chart that has been “directed.” The outer planet transits are the same for everyone at the same time, and therefore have meaning for everyone and only becomes personalized if they happen to activate a personal planet in the natal chart. Solar Arc directions are unique for an individual, and very personal. They are derived from projecting the individual Sun’s actual degree movement in time to all the natal planets and points in the individual’s personal birth chart, “directing” them to other chart locations activating the natal promise. Because of these differences, solar arcs “setup” the potential and “activate” something already promised. If it is not “written” in the birth chart, it cannot be activated, nor manifested. The activation of the natal chart means that the planet receiving the direction has been “charged” or “turned on”, and awaiting the proper outer planet transit for its promised manifestation in the life of the individual.
Elvis Presley's natal chart contains a Grand Square configuration containing the Sun, the representative of his life force and body, and Venus, the ruler his house of illness. These planets are conjunct and opposing Pluto in the Cancer 8th house of death. This one natal signature describes the potential for death to come from an illness in the body, particularly the heart (Sun). In horary astrology, the 8th house represents the bathroom, and elimination of waste products, particularly via the sewage system, and so does the water signs. Elvis Presley died while sitting on the toilet trying to defecate in the privacy of his own home (8th house/Cancer). He caused his heart to stop because he was applying so much force and power (Pluto) that he cut off circulation to his heart (Sun) and caused a heart attack (Sun/Pluto).
The activated network of planets contained in Elvis’ Grand Square add tremendous detail to the event of his death without using any directions or transits because the story was already “written” in the chart to begin with. The ruler of Pluto, the Moon, seems to be the main, but “hidden” author for Elvis’ life story. Presley’s Moon, the representative of his mother, was so important and pivotal, that we can unfold Elvis’ story by just looking at his Moon. His Moon not only rules Pluto, while opposing his personal planet stellium from the 8th house death, it has its Antiscia point on the POF, and its Contra-Antiscia point on Uranus, making a “hidden” reflection of the Moon at the other opposition axis of his Grand Square configuration. The Moon exerts its influence on 3 of the 4 angles of the grand square, and could even influence the 4th corner by its conjunction to Saturn, the corner stellium ruler.
Having the most sensitive personal planet being connected, influencing, and influenced by the most intense, transpersonal, and important outer planets Pluto and Uranus, is quite powerful and speaks to Elvis’ soul being incarnated for larger collective purposes. Being in Pisces, his Moon was highly sensitive, but it was conjunct hard-working, consistent, and dignified Saturn in Aquarius. Hard work, power, originality, electricity, emotional sensitivity, all manifesting through Uranus and Pluto for a much bigger purpose -- Maybe one we will never fully appreciate or understand. Contra-Antiscia has the energy of a square, and therefore Uranus and the Moon needed to manifest and work through something. This is interesting because it seems that Elvis Presley's Uranus played the major role in his unique, electric creativity, and this relationship to the Moon explains that it was driven by his soul, and his emotional needs, instincts and subconscious habits. From this perspective, it makes sense why Elvis was so hell bent to spiral out of control. Uranus can easily get out of control just because its Uranus, but with the Moon pushing it from subconscious needs trying to get filled, it was almost guaranteed. Because Elvis’ Moon rules the 8th house of death, mixing its subconscious emotional needs, instincts, and habits with an out-of-control 5th house Arian Uranus, the potential for deadly consequences emerges, along with the passion for his unique creativity that made him iconic.
Also, Moon/Uranus signatures speaks about emotional detachment, and having strange needs and desires for unconditional freedom. What a difficult combination to have – a tremendous want for emotional closeness and security (Pisces Moon in 4th), along with a relentless need for estrangement, detachment, fun, play, with personal freedom and autonomy (Aries Uranus in 5th). No wonder Elvis had to have a woman in his bed every night, but it was fine if it was a different woman... it didn't matter to him. He also seemed most interested in young teenage girls. There are several reports of his relationships with 14-year-old girls, even into his 50s. This behavior was experienced by Priscilla throughout their marriage, and it continued long after their divorce. Psychologists suspect that Elvis Presley suffered from a “Madonna/Mother/Whore” complex wherein he just wanted to be mothered or have someone mother him, or have meaningless sex, but both activities could not exist together. Priscilla Presley stated that Elvis told her that he had never been able to sleep with a woman that was also a mother. Unfortunately, this statement came to haunt her because after she gave birth to their daughter Lisa Marie, Elvis lost his sexual desire for Priscilla, which led to their ultimate divorce. This Moon of course is the representative of the strong relationship Elvis had to his own mother, and her early death left him completely distraught. As a child, Elvis was accused of being a “mommy’s boy.” It seems his “mommy complex” drove him from birth to death. Notice the Chiron/Moon square and the Ascendant/Neptune square flanking the Grand Square. Quite an amazing statement right there indeed!
