Mars is turning retrograde at 9° Aquarius on June 24, 2018. The planet of war, courage, strength, anger, defense, etc. He has been in his shadow period the past month and is now stationing on the nodal axis at 8°. He is making a loud statement by this retrograde period by his configuration with the nodal axis, being in his exaltation co-present with his domicile ruler Saturn who receives him. And, to add even more power to this Mars, he is squaring Uranus as Uranus newly ingresses into his new home of Taurus. This is big stuff! Mars’ retrograde periods are the rarest of all, and because he is one of our “personal” inner planets, his retrograde periods are much more noteworthy. The last time Mars went retrograde in this part of the zodiac was back in 1971. What was that like? I don’t remember 1971 for myself personally. I can only state what has been happening around me currently, and to the people I love that have strong planetary placements in the late degrees of the cardinal signs and/or the early degrees of the fixed signs. I’m watching friends’ having parents undergoing surgery, or not recovering from surgery; the death of a parent or grandparent. People having accidents, children losing friends by accidental drowning, mass shootings, shooting threats, and friends of friends being diagnosed with end stage leukemia. All of this has happened within the past month during Mar’s transit through his shadow -- Mars also rules surgery, accidents, and hematopoiesis. It makes me wonder about the bigger picture – what is the grand purpose? Why would we need to experience these martial tragedies? If you believe in a universe that is meant ultimately to have us reach the highest good as I do, then the only thing that makes any sense to me is that these painful realities are meant to keep us diligent. Keep us aware of what is truly important in our lives. Without these devastating martial events, we might get complacent… take things for granted… get our priorities out of whack. What do you think? -- Any opinions, ideas?

I really enjoyed the statements that you made and all that you have stated makes me believe that when we are attached to outcomes and do not allow experiences to just be that, then there is a lot of suffering a lot of pain a lot of anguish . We live in universe and on a planet filled with amazing beauty it is also made up of tumultuous energy. That same energy that lives within the human being the same energy that gives this life and create from one form into another is what ultimately has the say. We are the children of this universe. I believe that having awareness of this and enjoying every day for beauty that it brings. Whether in smiles and tears even in doubt and confusion. All of that helps us ultimately in our evolution as a whole and the simple truth is that we are that which cannot be truly named for we are far more complex and beautiful then we can imagine. In the greatest of disaster the universe brings in a wave of hope to help us triumph after Martial events. Its teaching us that life simply is. Its teaching us to be grateful for the experience and thankful for this life. My view is one that gets adorned with a more of a philosophical type if bent. I think its due to Jupiter and Mercury in Taurus natally. Blessings to you.

You seem to be speaking about the ultimate truth that there is only one real moment -- the current moment -- and that is all we truly have. To live in this current moment is where all our blessings are found. Attaching ourselves to failed outcomes of the past, or worrying about future outcomes, are what keep us on a cycle of pain and fear -- the ultimate killer of the spirit within. Thank you for your Jupiter/Mercury grounded philosophical enlightenment! I like it!

I tend to hear most about Mercury going in retrograde. Do all planets do this from time to time? Is Mercury just the one that does it most often? Or does it have the most powerful effect? Why don't we hear more about the other planets going into retrograde?

Why don't we hear more about the other planets going into retrograde? These are great questions, and I’m glad you asked them. Yes, all the planets, except for the luminaries (Sun and Moon) go retrograde. Retrograde is the visually apparent backward motion of the planets through the sky from our perspective on Earth. The planets are not really going backward in the sky, they only appear to be from our point of view. It is an illusion -- just like when you pass a slower car on the freeway. The slower car will appear to move backward from your perspective, but it is still truly moving forward. Here is a picture to show what it looks like if you were to watch the planet nightly during its retrograde cycle from our perspective on Earth. Mercury does go retrograde more frequently than the other planets because it is the fastest moving planet being so close to the Sun. Mercury goes retrograde about 3 times a year, and that probably is one reason it is more noteworthy. Another might be because it is easy to blame electronic malfunctions on a retrograde Mercury. It makes for good hype possibly? -- an easy attention grabber? No, I do not think that Mercury going retrograde has the most powerful effect as compared to the other “inner” planets. I feel that the most powerful retrograde planet felt by an individual is probably Mars, especially natally. Venus would play a close 2nd. And, depending upon the activated planets for an individual at a given moment in time, as decided by profection and timelord systems, Venus retrograde could be mighty powerful indeed. We probably do not hear about the other personal planets going retrograde, because they do not go retrograde as frequently. Venus goes retrograde approximately every 1 ½ years, and Mars approximately every 2 years. The other “outer” planets are retrograde quite frequently, and for much longer periods of time, therefore many astrologers do not consider their retrograde periods important.

Each planet in the Solar System has their own retrograde period. Susan explained it here very well. The further you go out from Earth (i.e. the outer planets) the longer the retrograde period. Neptune and Pluto have bigger orbits around the Sun; therefore, their retrograde periods are longer. I used to be an Astronomy major in my early college years.
Sorry for my grammar and if I sound a little redundant. lol

Yes, Janie... it seems the only plausible reason that I can come up with. Thank you!
