Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great 4th of July holiday! I’ve been trying to figure out what I should write for you guys, and decided I would illustrate how important the Ascendant is in the natal chart. I am going to do this by using “time twins.” Time twins are two people, born on the same day, but are not related. These same-day births make every planet configured almost the same in each respective natal chart. However, because these “time twins” are not born at the exact same time, at the exact same location, they have different Ascendants. The Ascendant is a fast-moving point in the chart, and it is what “individuates” the planetary energies that “define” the individual – creating a different person, life, energies, perspectives, and experiences. The Ascendant is strictly dependent upon the place and time of birth, and it is the most important point in the chart for individualization.
The time twins I will be using are Andy Griffith and Marilyn Monroe. Both celebrities were born on June 1, 1926, but they have different Ascendants, and Ascendant rulers, and therefore, are entirely different. I attached their charts so that you can compare them. Here we go!
Marilyn Monroe - Ascendant in Leo, Neptune in 1st, Sun @ 10° Gemini in 11th
Marilyn had a way of engaging with the world that is mesmerizing and hypnotic -- a projection that shines and says look at me, I'm special. She projects warmth and a recognition of being noticed, but internally there is also self-consciousness and insecurities. Neptune in the 1st adds a dreamy, almost mystical self-expression that people get lost in and project their fantasies onto. She engages with the world in an otherworldly manner, such as through drama, creativity, fantasy and escapism. Projecting through movies and modeling is a perfect expression of this Neptune/Leo energy. A Leo Ascendant is the drama expert, and can really seek attention through dramatic displays. Its ruler, the Sun, "shines" in the 11th house of groups, friends, the community at large, and associations. Therefore, Marilyn's “essence” finds its best expression through the public, groups, and the community at large. She may have had powerful friends and associates that helped her projection into the world. Who she truly is, and her projected self-image, work together to create a dramatic, dreamy, "special" individual who is popular in the world. Her Sun in Gemini in the 11th suggests that she is lively, talkative, witty, and enjoys many friends and playfulness. She seeks variety and fun in her friendships, but there may not be much depth in these associations. Her Sun is peregrine, and therefore, Marilyn could have felt lost. It might take her a while for her to figure out who she really is, and in the meantime, she will be relying on her friends, the public, and her associates to guide her along her life's path.
The Leo Ascendant, particularly with Neptune in the 1st (squaring Saturn in the 4th) being ruled by a peregrine Gemini Sun, was powerfully expressed in Marilyn's life: Her childhood was considered tragic. She was in and out of foster homes, an orphanage, and she truly thought she was invisible. When young, she threatened a childhood friend with a knife and was institutionalized. She experienced repeated sexual assaults and was raped at 11 years old. Despite becoming "the world's biggest and most enduring sex symbol", she suffered from severe psychiatric problems, chronic insecurities, and pre-performance anxiety before every show. She thoroughly craved attention however, and had a string of unsuccessful relationships, and three short-lived marriages. She died at 36 years old by an "accidental" suicide, but had been trying to reach friends for months to help her while she was spiraling down into a psychotic break. She was found dead face down in her bed, holding her phone.

Andy Griffith - Ascendant in Libra, Venus in Aries in 7th
Andy engages with the world in a receptive, social fashion. Everyone is considered an equal, and social nicety is utilized in a charming and balanced way. It is through this interaction with others that Andy discovers who he is, his likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses -- as everyone he meets becomes a mirror for viewing himself. He learns a lot about himself, and others, through this Ascendant. His ruler Venus, in the 7th house, reiterates this theme of mirroring, and the learning about self through face-to-face interactions. There is an ongoing inner balancing of experiences. Andy tries to balance and understand the other's identity, while honoring his own at the same time. It is a difficult and delicate process that gets easier with time. This inner scaling and metering will go unnoticed by other people, but he will be working with it. Partnerships and relationships of all kinds will be the arena where Andy will spend much of his time learning about life. Venus, as his Ascendant ruler, may give him a love of art, music, poetry, and making true connections with others. Because Venus is in detriment, there will most likely be troubles with intimate partners and marriage. However, Venus is in a one-way mutual reception with Mars in Pisces. With effort, this problem can be mitigated and give Andy a spiritual, unconditional undertone to his already loving nature. Protection of loved ones, and his relationships, will become vitally important, as Mars is always interested in protection. Andy will probably marry young, but the marriage may lack permanence, stability and grounding. As Andy gets older and finds his own identity, creating grounding and stability through the protection of close relationships will become paramount for him.
There is not much written about Andy's personal relationships, because protecting his privacy and the privacy of his loved ones precluded that. Apparently, he lives in a small community where he is guarded by his close friends. If any of his friends are asked where Andy lives, the inquirer is sent running around in circles, and eventually gets to the ocean. Andy has created a protective environment full of close, intimate friendships and family. His first marriage, at the age of 23, ended in divorce after a long 20+ year marriage. There is nothing written about why the marriage ended, but I suspect it was just that they had nothing more in common. I feel the marriage was probably just something Andy felt he wanted to do, as Venus would do. But, he did not know himself well enough to make that life-long decision. It probably lasted so long because of Andy's ability to think of other's, and be selfless. He had a shorter second marriage, with nothing written about it as well. And his third marriage seemed to be what he was truly wanting. Andy states about that marriage -- "she and I are not only married, we are truly partners". They were married 29 years before his death in 2012. True partnership is what he was striving for, and that statement suggests he had finally found it. His love of true connection was evident in his acting career, and in his love of singing and making gospel music albums. Before he became an actor he wanted to be a preacher, and was enrolled in a divinity college. He also wanted to be an opera singer, showing his inconsistencies about who he was, and who is was going to become. His daughter says he was a very "hands-on" Dad, and you can tell she had a very loving relationship with him. I bet he was a great father...
